DeVoe

Tin, the most useful of all metals, has been used since ancient times to make vessels of many sorts.  England's Cornwall was an early source and manufacturing center for tin; and in the 19th century Cornish miners and English and Welsh metal workers immigrated to the United States where the tin industry flourished.  This book provides a rich history of the manufacturing processes and methods for decoration of antique, utilitarian tin ware on both sides of the Atlantic.  The examples demonstrate a variety of wares and details to help identify English and American products.  This book will be an asset to the library of any collector or anyone who can appreciate the artistry of the craft.

In 2004 Gene began making candle cups out of type "K" copper pipe which has a wall thickness of 1/16", double that of type "M" pipe. The thicker candle cups are more attractive in my opinion and, when handled, have a nice feel to them. They are actually easier to forge and produce due to the thicker wall.

"Copper Candle Cups II" has detailed explanations of methods, techniques and tooling used to make candle cups out of the thicker wall type "K" pipe.

Note: The tooling for thicker wall type "K" pipe has different dimensions
than those for type "M" pipe.

Often regarded as the ultimate reference book for metalworkers. Oppi Untracht's earlier book, was published in 1968 by Doubleday. He is most known for enameling and is well known in the jewelry industry. Oppi Untracht was a Fulbright Scholar in both India and Nepal for 4 years, and during this time he spent a lot of time with many metalsmiths studying their art and photographed their work. This information and his experiences are shared throughout this book. This is an exhaustive photographic treatment of artistic processes with metal as well as an excellent resource for history, philosophy, anthropology and technology of art metal working. The scenes throughout, of craftsmen producing magnificent works using the most primitive techniques, is truly fascinating. Their is a detailed treatment on inlaying as a craftsman from India first casts and then inlays silver into a piece of Bidri work. In this example alone he uses 34 photos to show the process from casting a dish to finally polishing the finished product with the silver inlaid into the surface. There are other excellent books on the market that talk about inlaying such as "Metalwork and Enamelling" by Herbert Maryon (BK431) but it only "talks" you through the processes. Untracht shows you through a photographic form. He also uses detailed tables and charts to convey his information. Their is also sections on filigree, niello, kuftgari, and an index of Material and Tool suppliers, a Glossary and a Bibliography.

    by Jerry Henderson

    62 pages, (Spiral bound)

Repousse means to repeal in French; the craftsmen that did Repousse work were often called embossers. Jerry's background in Repousse comes from Nahum Hersom. Nahum Hersom offers a Repousse worshop at his shop in Boise, Idaho. This book documents his workshop and parts of his hand written workbook. Nahum came from a generation that didn't have a lot of extra money, so if they needed something they had to make it. The value of this book is to give the blacksmith and other metalworkers a foundation to do Detail and Definition work, specifically Ornamental Metal. The German method of embossing is what Nahum Hersom teaches; he learned his craft from Mr.Valatine Goelz.

There was scarcely a household in Britain that did not possess some items of pewter: bowls, plates, spoons, candlesticks, toys and buttons were some of the everyday objects made of this alloy of tin. Introduced to Britain by the Romans, the pewter trade became widespread in the middle ages, and English pewter became renowned for its high quality. The trade reached a peak in the seventeenth century. Competition from other materials brought a decline in the eighteenth century and the main centre of production moved from London to the Midlands. In the nineteenth century new techniques of manufacture were introduced in Sheffield, now the predominant centre of the trade in Britain. Reference is also made to the craft in other countries and there is advice for collectors.
