Bentz 128 pgs. Soft Cover
Editor's Description: This handy just-published book is the compilation of the latest veterinary knowledge of equine neurological disorders. The author, Dr. Bradford Bentz, VMD, MS, has done a very good job with a complex subject. Information regarding specific diseases is presented clearly and is organized in chapters based on underlying cause, e.g. trauma, infection, genetic or metabolic dysfunction. Anyone who owns a horse with a possible neurological problem needs to read this concise but thorough book. In the different chapters, Dr. Bentz clarifies the structure, function and some of the disease processes for the layperson. He shows the reader what to expect in a careful examination. He discusses possible toxins from feed to insecticides that may be the root cause. And he discusses realistic ways in which to care for horses that suffer from different degrees of neurological damage. Due to the disease commonly known as EPM (equine protozoal myeloencephalitis) doctors know much more about equine neurological disorders than they used to. Dr. Bentz appears to be open-minded to all forms of treatment. In discussing therapeutic regimens for EPM he lists steroids, Bute, Banamine, homeopathic remedies, supplements, acupuncture, acupressure, massage therapy and chiropractic therapy. But adds, "perhaps the most important treatment is rest." Equine internist Dr. Brad Bentz has drawn from many years of experience in private and university practice at the University of Kentucky.
