Kasenit is a rapid compound for surface hardening. It is non-poisonous, non-explosive and non-flammable. It may be used with equally good results on all classes of steel, as well as cast, wrought or malleable iron. Kasenit #1 is use for fine work and very rapid hardening. Blacksmiths can not go without this wonderful compound. It is a must have in your professional shop! It will save you lots of time!
It is an open hearth compound that needs NO SPECIAL EQUIPMENT.
Two methods of application are:
Method A: Heat the work uniformly to a bright red (1650 deg F - 1700 deg F); remove any scale with a wire brush; dip, roll or sprinkle the powder on the piece. The Kasenit powder will melt and adhere to the surface, forming a shell around the work. Reheat to 1650-1700 deg F, hold at this temperature a few minutes and quench in cold clean water. This will give the component a completely hard case of uniform character and depth.
Method B:If a deeper case is required, then a container for the compound can be used. a discarded can, lid or tray is suitable for this purpose, but care must be taken to burn off the tin coating before use. Completely cover the component with compound and heat to a bright red (1650 deg F) for 5-30 minutes, depending upon the depth of the case required. Quench only the component in clean, cold water using dry tongs for handling.
Rates of penetration:
After heating the component to 1650 degress, using Method B
Case Depth Time
.005 15 minutes
.010 30 minutes
.015 40 minutes
.020 50 - 55 minutes
Methods for cast or tool steel:
Heat the article to a light yellow. Deposit it in the powder and leave it there until its right tempering heat is reached. Then plunge the metal into clean, cold water. This will bring out the hardness and also prevent cracking.
