Cross, Diagonal & Straight Pein Hammers

The essential part of a hammer is the head, a compact solid mass that is able to deliver the blow to the intended target without itself deforming. The opposite or back side has a cross, diagonal or straight pein (peen).

As the impact between steel hammer heads and the objects being hit can, and does, create sparks, which in some industries such as underground coal mining with methane gas, or in other hazardous environments containing flammable gases and vapours, can be dangerous and risk igniting the gases. In these environments you should use extreme caution.

Pieh Tool Ergonomic Diagonal Pein Hammer, 2.5 lb

The Pieh Tool Diagonal Pien Ergonomic hammers come in Left or Right handed styles. These hammers are perfect for the blacksmith or knifemaker. The broad pein allows for better fullering.

Diagonal pein hammers are preferred by many because the pein is already positioned at a comfortable angle to make forging easier! Its compact head allows the hammer to be worked at extreme angles using the edge of the face to fuller.

Our Ergonomic Hammers are designed to move metal fast. Their compact head allows the hammer to be worked at extreme angles. Hammers are well balanced and made from 4142 tool steel and hardened to a Rockwell 52.

Each handle is ground and fit from straight grain aged hickory and then stained. The hammer handle is glued using a modern Polyurethane adhesive. This has the advantage of being able to flex during humidity and temperature changes which should give you many years of trouble free performance without the head loosening. You should always take the time to fit the handle to your hand.

Like all hand forged items each is unique and the overall weight and shape will vary slightly.

*Tip: If you should break a handle simply heat the hammer at the cheeks slowly and carefully and the old handle can be removed.

Pieh Tool Standard Cross Pein Hammer

Pieh Tool Standard Cross Pein Hammers are available in 2 sizes: 1.5 lbs, 2.5 lbs.

The Pieh Tool Standard Cross-Peen is an evolution of the ergonomic cross pein hammer. The head of the hammer uses a standard size eye which concentrates the hammers weight around the center rather then the ends.

In addition this style of hammer is equally weighted on both ends to allow effortless switching from face to pein. Other ergonomic hammers use a large eye which moves the weight laterally and across center mass. By keeping the overall length of the hammer short we have developed a hammer that is extremely well balanced yet has the benefit of having a less bulky handle.

This hammers smaller eye allows the handle to retain the familiar double taper shape yet is significantly smaller. This allows a lot of comfort for those with smaller hands. This hammer is made from 4340 and is hand forged and painstakingly heat treated.
